Merchant Consultants Inc. Helps Merchants Navigate Tricky Transaction Fees

Wednesday, May 23, 2018

When Darwish Harper opened his merchant services business five years ago, he didn’t want to do things like everybody else.

With more than two decades of experience helping retailers navigate the payment system, including nearly a decade as an assistant vice president for merchant services at Wells Fargo, Harper knew he had a level of expertise that was far beyond what the typical merchant services outpost could offer.

He also knew that retailers needed a lot more than just a middleman between their card transactions and their bank accounts. They needed to understand the process, and the real costs, which can be buried in layers of various fees.

With his insider’s knowledge, Harper wanted to offer a more consultative approach to the business. The result was Merchant Consultants Inc., a five-year-old merchant services business built less around processing and more around educating retailers on how to navigate a tricky process.

“We didn’t want to be the same old business model,” says Harper of the company he founded, and where he serves as president. “I’ve been in the merchant space over 25 years. If I can help a company … or save them some money or just educate them on the things they need to do in the future, I’m the happiest guy there is.”

Collaborative Approach Leads to FBG Partnership

Often times, Harper says, a few simple practices can yield significant savings.

“We can reduce those fees by making a few minor changes,” he says. “We have companies that we have saved $10,000 to $50,000 a year in processing fees.”

Unlike many of its competitors, Merchant Consultants Inc. does not charge its customers for services and does not require a contract. Instead, the Eagan, Minn.-based company plays a more collaborative role, offering merchants a free cost analysis and partnering with other companies to provide clients with an even broader range of services and expertise.

It’s a strategy that has paid off in referrals, which Harper says account for 98% of the company’s business.

A collaborative approach was also behind the company’s decision to partner with FBG Holdings and its affiliated companies: SBS Payroll, Payroll Tax Management, Cachet Financial Services and Time Rack.

The range of services that FBG offers through its sister companies, as well as its industry reputation, made it a good fit. “If I can provide a referral partner that really does an awesome job … it’s a great value add,” Harper said.
